• Road salt - Used for decades to prevent dangerous ice formationon road ways. The combination of salts used vastly accelerates corrosion of any metallic materials. Snow plow filings ground off on the road ways, braking material and other metallic fallout sit in a slush salt brine that coats your entire vehicle. These metallic fallout particles can rust into the paintwork and cause serious damage.
• Sand, grit and salt additives - Abrasive rock material added to salt trucks for traction, gets stuck on your vehicle and any ill-practices to remove (ie. tunnel washes with high speed spinning brushes) result in scratching of paint and glass.
• Freezing cold, dry air - Despite the dampness of melted snow, winter is especially hard on soft surfaces and any rubber materials meant to cushion or dampen sound in a vehicle. Surfaces affected can also include interior vinyl and leather along with door jamb seals. These surfaces can dry and dehydrate, door seals can stick and tear if not protected regularly.
• Touchless washes can't quite get it - Touchless washes use harsh detergents to compensate for the absense of gentle touch to remove dirt and debris. While significantly better and safer for vehicles than regular "cloth" or brush tunnel washes these detergents, stain metal accents, stain trim, and very quickly wear away any wax or sealant on the vehicle.
• Tunnel washes - High speed spinning brush washes are some of the worst things you can do to your vehicle. Anyone with a careful eye can see when cars leave these tunnels, they are only 65% clean, with ice and salt still covering the vehicle. All things look cleaner when wet, so anything left over on the bottom half or in the panel gaps or crevices is picked up on the (dark colored) towels and wiped all over the vehicle scratching it further. It's no surprise these washes are rough when mirrors are slammed back and antennas come out broken.
